The story
Heritage is a generative art collection that merges deep-rooted culture with modern technology. Beadworks are globally appreciated by thousands of communities, more specifically in Africa. They have been a core part of African cultures across the continent for centuries. They are a symbol of beauty, sexuality, spirituality, status, identity and much more. Their colours, shapes and sizes all hold different stories to tell. Through necklaces, bracelets, anklets, waist beads and artefacts, beadworks have solidified their presence in the modern world while still preserving the rich history associated with them. We as contemporary creators pay homage to this timeless craft and the generations of artists who safeguarded it for legacies. Each output, through our meticulously crafted palettes, is a piece of the past, present and future presented on a canvas. We are preserving our heritage. PriceThe process
Since 2022, we started exploring flow fields thanks to Tyler Hobbs’ Fidenza which made perlin noise (the core algorithm behind flow fields) become a staple in the generative art scene. Since then it has become one of the most explored algo by many creative coders, to a fault even, some may argue. To us, however, this often maligned technique sparked an idea. An idea that would transcend beyond the technicalities of the computer; one that would merge it with culture. Through studying beadwork-making in the real world by interacting with and interviewing multiple artisans, Heritage was born. By placing several thousands of ellipses with varying reflection angles on a perlin noise field, we found out it mirrored the physical art pieces quite well. Since then, for the past 1.5 years, we have been perfecting our algorithm through dozens of trials and errors, code optimisation and seeking inspiration to present it to the world, the best way we could. We developed unique colouring techniques that ensured wide range of outputs with small-sized palettes and guaranteed aesthetic value. When we merge this with the use of flowfields and other traits, we get a vastly broad spectrum of possible outputs waiting to be explored. This project marks a pivotal moment for us as we continue to explore more beadwork techniques through programming to preserve and carry forward this craft into the digital age.
About the artist
Kamau and Wright are a duo of creative coders from Nairobi, Kenya. Since 2019, they have combined their technical and creative skills to build software systems and eventually ventured into generative art and NFTs mid 2021. Since then, they have consistently put out multiple collaborative projects and works on the blockchain. This has seen them receiving recognition globally in the digital art space and even notable companies like Twitter buying into their project. As one of the pioneers of on-chain generative art in Africa, they aim to showcase the power of code and art, preserve their culture and continue to build and pave the way for many more creators to come.
